Pre-Production Documents: What are they?Pre-Production Documents are documents made by designers (designers of movies, games, etc.) to plan out a game's/movie's story line and characters. Pre-Production Documents include Storyboards, Character Sketches, etc. We had a project that required us to make these documents. My character sketchMy character is named Officer Stanley. He is a police officer that seems to be in the right place at the right time almost all of the time. He is a typical police officer, and works for the Mauryville Police Force. My storyboardMy show, Officer Stanley Stops Crime Again!, starts off with him trying to pull over an Oscar-Meyer® Wienermobile. The driver speeds off, prompting a chase. As the chase goes on, the Wienermobile pulls over, and the driver gets out. But, he starts firing a gun towards Officer Stanley, which prompts Stanley to call for back-up. As back-up arrives, the driver begins to run. But, Officer Stanley is already on his tail, and was able to tackle him and arrest him. Why is this important? In order to effectively plan out and show a game's story line, you must create a storyboard to show a story's plot, and how it changes throughout the story. To effectively show a character's anatomy and important features, you create a sketch of your character. Every game designer uses these documents to plan out their games. Directors use storyboards to plan out their movies. If I were to become a game designer, I would have to use these documents to plan out my game and its components. In Summary

Game MechanicsAs described by the first edition of "The Art of Game Design," Game Mechanics are "what a game truly is." They are parts of the game that are left when the aesthetics and story are taken out. They include space, time, objects, actions, rules, etc. Space and Time can be limited, or discrete, or unlimited, also known as continuous. Objects have a certain state. This is represented on a state diagram. A state diagram is a chart that shows what the state of the object is, how it got there, and what will cause it to change. Actions can be represented in two categories: Basic (Operative) Action and Strategic (Resultant) Action. A basic action is an action that a player can take in a game (like moving your piece in Checkers). A strategic action is an action that is only meaningful is the larger scale of a game (like kinging your piece in Checkers). Basic and Strategic actions combine to make "emergent gameplay." You make this by adding more basic actions, allowing basic actions to interact with multiple things, etc. Rules make all other game mechanics possible. They define each and every other mechanic of the game. Prisoner's DilemmaPrisoner's Dilemma is a game of decision that we played. It goes like this. Two inmates are put on trial, and they have a choice. They can confess, or they can keep quiet. If both inmates keep quiet, they go to jail for one year. If both inmates confess, they both get five years. If one confesses and one doesn't, the one who confesses is freed, while the other gets 10 years. It can be a game of both probability and a game of skill. There is a specific strategy to the game that if you choose to confess each time, you have at least a 50% chance of winning, because you will never get 10 years, and if they choose to keep quiet, they get 10 years. Otherwise, you will get up to 5 years each time. Elemental Decision Tree GameThe Elemental Decision Tree Game (EDTG) is a game where we were given Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire, and we had to make a decision game out of it (a game like Rock Paper Scissors). We had to choose what won, what lost, and what tied. We were given a chart as a template, and Chloe and I ultimately made the chart seen below. This is different from Prisoner's Dilemma, because there is almost no skill involved, and there is less of a chance of winning, because there are more choices than Prisoner's Dilemma. In Summary
What was the game?Pokémon Alpha Sapphire is a remake by Game Freak of the game Pokémon Sapphire, which is a main game in the Pokémon series. It is supposed to almost replicate the game, but has some differences to fit with the audience now. What does the game consist of?The game consists of a story line that travels around a region/country called Hoenn. It followed a specific order of routes that you go through to get to specific cities. In some cities, you would challenge the gym in that city to try to earn a badge. To finish the game, you'd have to get eight badges. After you earn eight badges, you go to the Pokémon League, where you will fight four incredibly strong trainers in a row. After you beat all four, you will face the champion. This is the same as all other Pokémon games. How is Pokémon Alpha Sapphire different from other Pokémon games?Although Pokémon Alpha Sapphire is very similar to the other Pokémon games, it is also very different. Pokémon Alpha Sapphire included a thing called Mega Evolution. Mega Evolution occurs when a "mega stone" (different for each pokémon) is given to a pokémon, and a "key stone" is given to a trainer, and the mega stone reacts with the key stone. This causes the fully-evolved pokémon to temporarily evolve into a more powerful version of itself. Pokémon Alpha Sapphire also includes unique gameplay experiences, and different types of ways to hunt for different types of pokémon. Did I enjoy it?I enjoyed it a lot. I loved its gameplay, its "random-number-generator" aspect, and its decision-making aspect. Me being a Pokémon fan, I have already enjoyed other games, like Pokémon Sun, Pokémon X, Pokémon Gold, etc. But, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire is my favorite out of all that I've played.
